About this class: A 6-week online adult course on civic education. This course takes you from the philosophical foundations of the U.S. Constitution through the modern interpretation and application of its ideals. The course follows the We the People: The Citizen & the Constitution Level 3 textbook, which has been used throughout the country to further understanding of our government and its fundamental principles. The first three chapters will be covered during the 6-week class. Chapters 4-6 will be offered during spring 2026.
Required Textbook:
We the People: The Citizen & the Constitution, Level 3 (4th Edition) We encourage you to purchase a copy—available from the Center for Civic Education or your preferred bookseller—but a free online version will also be included in your confirmation email after registration.

Instructor bio: Chris Cavanaugh is a high school Social Studies teacher with over 30 years of classroom experience. A James Madison Foundation Senior Fellow, he has been a passionate advocate for civic education for nearly as long as he has been teaching.
