Save the Humanities in North Dakota
On April 2, 2025, the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) abruptly terminated our core federal funding. Yet funding the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) costs just 18 cents per person each year—a tiny investment that delivers enormous value. NEH funding sustains state humanities councils like Humanities North Dakota, making vital programs in education, culture, and civic engagement accessible to everyone. Eliminating this funding would save the federal government a negligible amount, but the loss to our communities would be profound.
What’s At Risk
Now more than ever, we need to teach American history, reflect on our founding principles, and ensure every citizen understands their rights and responsibilities. It’s an investment in our democracy—and it costs less than a postage stamp per person each year.
Without federal funding, we may lose:
-
We the People – Civics education for students and teachers
-
Public University – Free and low-cost college-level classes for adults
-
Brave Conversations – Cross-partisan dialogue for divided times
-
One Book One North Dakota – A statewide reading experience
-
Chautauqua – Living history performances and civic discussions
These are the programs that make North Dakota stronger, more informed, and more connected.
